An Endorsement of Impeachment: The Only Answer

For the last three years, President George W. Bush has authorized, without Congressional consent or the power of established law, illegal surveillance phone taps on thousands of innocent Americans.
The very fact that such wiretaps have proceeded without the consent of the specially appointed FISA court is extremely alarming, and the idea that those who authorized the illegal actions could continue to hold power is simply abominable, contrary to everything we know in this land about Constitutional supremacy and equality before the law. It is because of this most egregious of violations that we here at ConservativeDemocratNews are now officially calling for the impeachment of our nation’s 43rd Chief Executive, United States President George W. Bush. We extend our endorsement to all other democratic (lower case intentional) organizations advocating the legal removal of this President and the protection of that most sacred of documents, the United States Constitution. Mr. Bush, upon his accession in 2001, took an oath to “preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.” He has now violated the terms of the agreement by which he became the Commander-in-Chief of this country, and no longer has the legal right to hold that office.
His usurpations of power have become too great, the danger to our Republic too real. Impeachment is the only remedy. The rule of law in the United States must be preserved.

Ah, good, an attorney. I'd love to get your detailed opinion on thsi, from a legal point of view. Please respond to this in a detailed way, as it would be very interesting to hear a lawyer's take on the possibility of impeachment.

I would love to see Bush removed from office, but don't see a impeachment strategy as viable. Furthermore, I tend to agree with the Democratic Leadership Council that focusing too much on the NSA abuses might actually backfire against Democrats. The DLC is advocating that Democrats take the lead in defining a national security strategy that will balance personal liberties with the need to monitor potential terrorist activity. Here's a link to the DLC column. http://tinyurl.com/7vlhf

Of course we need to define a national security policy that defends civil liberties. That's the whole point, don't you see? Who cares if focusing on the NSA backfires on the Democrats? It's not about just politics anymore, it's about SAVING OUR NATION. President Bush has threatened the Constitution itself, and for that we must impeach him, no matter what the political cost. If he isn't brought to justice, what kind of message do we send? That a President can break the law? No, he cannot. If it were a Democrat, I would feel the same way.

The domestic-spying issue is too fundamental for compromises. Our Constitution was written around a core of absolutes that are worth a lifetime of fidelity to protect.

I think the liberties taken by the FISA court were a serious issue by themselves, much less the court being undercut entirely.

THANK YOU KAELRI.
That is exactly what I have been trying to say this entire time and exactly what so many people (Democrats among them) are completely missing. If everyone could see this as an issue of law, there would be no question of the need to impeach. As it is, the whole thing is so mired in politics that it may be the full truth never comes out and justice is never done. However, even if the House fails to ratify a single article against this President in the next two years, I will stand by my belief that he SHOULD be impeached. As the situation here and abroad continues to deteriorate, the President's speeches become more and more disconnected with reality. It should be interesting to see what kind fantasy the Administration spins in this State of the Union Address. I will certainly be watching.
